YouTube Rentals Anyone?

YouTube has entered the rental business at Youtube.com/store. You might be thinking, “Hoooray! Instant video for the masses!” Well hold it, sister. Youtube is indeed offering cheap, instant video downloads to the masses but they have the have a selection comparable to In and Out Burger.

The top four movie studios (Warner Bros., Fox, Paramount, Columbia) will not do business with Google (the owners of Youtube) because they are wary of the many ways people are able to rip media off of YouTube videos. Just do a Google search for “free youtube download” and notice the lovely assortment of law-breaking programs.

For now, the only recognizable movies I see in their selection are 3:10 to Yuma, Precious, Pi, Lord of War, and Reservoir Dogs. They range in price from $1.99 to $3.99.

YouTube’s store is a great place for people who don’t watch enough movies to require Netflix or people who like Indie films. If I’m in the mood for a last second movie, I think I’ll be checking out YouTube’s movie store.

Ride the Google Wave!

Billed as email taken to the next level, Google Wave has slowly been gathering interest among Google users. What is Google Wave? Well, I’ll tell you. Google Wave is a type of email that is very easy to use and offers a much quicker way of responding to messages. Most messages are shorter than the average email. They seem to play out more like a text message conversation than emails.

It will take time to see if Google Wave catches on. Once again, Google has come out with a creative and innovative product. It will be a shame if it becomes a failure.

Surf the Web While Riding a Bicycle Down a Mountain During a Thunderstorm While Being Attacked By Starving Crazed Weasils

I want a tough laptop! One that I can throw and not be worried about. A computer that I can drop on the floor, that I can play frisbee with, that I can smack my brother across the head with, that I can serve coffee on, and everything in between!

It seems that when I spend money on a computer, I end up spending too much time being worried that it’s going to break. That might be because I’m a clutz but I’m sure there are many other clutzes in this world.

I searched for tough laptops on google and I found that while tough computers exist, they all seem to rely on a giant shell for protection. Inside, they can still get pretty messed up. Well, until someone comes out with a light, tough computer I can do anything with I guess I’ll have to make due…until the next time I break my laptop.

Creative Commons is…Brilliant!

Years ago the childrens show Animaniacs had a segment called “Good Idea, Bad Idea.” It would begin with someone acting out a good idea followed by someone acting out a bad idea. For example…Good Idea! Whistling while you work. Bad Idea! Whistling while you eat.

I’d like to write my own. Good Idea! Using Creative Commons and let people build on your ideas. Bad Idea! Keeping your ideas to yourself.

Creative Commons is a website that allows people to submit ideas or things they are working on for others to see and build upon. Many companies use Creative Commons to allow other people to help them accomplish their goals. Its kind of like a less focused version of Wikipedia. Everyone can contribute, but only the good stuff is kept.

One area where Creative Commons can be very useful is in the field of education. If a teacher has a topic he would like focus on, he can submit some material to Creative Commons. Other teachers can then add their own content and change errors. Soon enough, you’ll have a more thoughtful, extensive, and developed product than what the original teacher would have had all by himself.

A lot of your favorite websites have used Creative Commons, including Flikr, Google, Wikipedia, and the White House. They have all found enormous success using the help of people all over the world. So if you have an idea that you would like to see grow, submit it to CC. Just make sure its one that people would actually want to build upon.
