Killing Two Birds With One Stone

I’ve used twitter for about a year. So far the experience has been largely uninteresting, except when I get interesting information or links from people / bands I’m following. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of the Facebook scene either… Maybe it’s because you have to navigate to the website every time you want to check your twitter account since twitter does not normally notify you of new tweets.

However! For you twitter fanatics out there, all is not lost! Behold the following applications:

  • ChromedBird: This Google Chrome application gives you access to your twitter timeline and produces an easy way to send messages to your friends. The little icon on your menu bar also changes color to let you know if you’ve received any tweets!
  • Digsby: This Windows / Mac application also periodically announces new tweets. It also has AIM, gChat, MSN, Facebook Chat, LinkedIn, etc. support. Very cool all-in-one package.

These two applications both provide sleek ways of updating you when you receive new tweets. Have you found any applications that are prettier / easier to use?

Facebook Face-lift

Facebook has gone through another graphical and interactive update! Many users will most likely gripe about the change and quickly become used to the new layout.

As a Facebook user, it’s important that you can zip around and easily add friends, send messages, and use applications! In order to get used to the new layout, let’s discuss what’s different!

What’s new with the new Facebook?

  • Icons for friends requests, messages, and notifications can now be found in the upper left corner of the page! Clicking on an icon pops up a dynamic window so you can read your messages, accept friend requests, and check out their notifications without leaving the home page.
  • Secondly, the chat list has been relocated to the left side of the window. Not a huge change, but it helps display the list to users who may have not known about F-book chat at all.
  • You can now access links to Facebook applications from your Facebook home page. Interesting idea, but this change doesn’t seem to help at all.

I personally think the presentation looks cleaner. What do you think about the new layout?

iPad and Entrepreneurship

By now I’m sure many of you have heard about the Apple iPad, a tablet computer revealed last week at Apple’s press release. So far the responses I have heard from friends have been rather mixed; I’ve heard quips about the name, criticisms about the lack of Flash support, and confusion about the overall purpose of the machine. Although the iPad does not have as much core capabilities as a net-book (and many people expected more renovations to the tablet design than were supplied), the iPad has the potential to influence entrepreneurship in a huge way.

First of all, an entrepreneur thrives on information access. The iPad offers 3G capabilities and would allow the user to easily access information on the web.

Secondly, the iPad is a slick presentation device. This device would be the perfect way to throw a sales pitch to a random potential customer.

Ever seen a thin, touch-capable, futuristic computer in a sci-fi movie? Because of Apple’s huge fan base, support for that kind of technology will increase now that the iPad is known to the public. This is good for the web entrepreneur because an increase in Web-dependent technology means an increase in potential customers.

Yes, the iPad has drawbacks. It may not be what people were expecting. However, web entrepreneurship can only benefit from the creation of a device like the iPad.
