Top 5 Spring Break Destinations of 2011

  1. Cancun: Cancun is pure craziness during spring break. It has thousands of college students ready to party 24-7. With gorgeous beaches and a plethora of fun late night clubs, there is never a dull moment. If you are looking for snorkeling and sightseeing, Cancun has Cozumel, Xel-Ha, and Tulum to offer. Mexico is also very cheap right now due to safety issues they have been having. While there are certain parts of Mexico I would be worried about, Cancun is not one of them. So take advantage of the good price, beautiful beaches, and constant partying!
  2. Panama City, Florida: Panama City is America’s number one spring break destination. With great weather, beautiful beaches, and plenty of partying, this is everything and more you want in a spring break experience. MTV U still has not been able to top the 2009 Panama City spring break coverage.
  3. Miami: South Beach is a killer time for any spring break enthusiast. Like all of my top choice, the beaches, weather, and party life are phenomenal. Miami can be a little bit more expressive, but if you have the money it will be worth your while. The South Beach club scene is one of the best in the world but again very expensive.
  4. Europe: Who doesn’t want to go to Europe? This time of year, most college students visit Amsterdam, London and Paris, which are all known for their great party scenes. The only downfalls to these cities are they will still be cold, so partying will be inside and price. Exchange rates are not as bad as they were last year but still not great. Some other good locations are Rome, Florence, Madrid, and Berlin. This is also a great time to go sightsee, since there won’t be summer crowds to wrestle with.
  5. Jamaica: Beaches, sun, partying, and Bob Marley, need I say anything more. Jamaica is very cheap and a lot of fun but be careful, some parts of the island can be a little wild and dangerous.

Why UConn Will Win the National Title

  1. More depth inside: UConn has a plethora of big men. They are all big and very physical. This is good because Butler has a very good big man in Matt Howard who can dominate the boards at times. Unfortunately for Butler, they are not very deep and can be worn down inside if they get into foul trouble. UConn’s Alex Oriakhi will get first dibs at Howard and has the athleticism to give him problems.  In the end, UConn’s depth will win out.
  2. Role Players: UConn’s role players are much more talented than Butler’s role players. Freshmen Jeremy Lamb, Shabazz Napier, and Roscoe Smith have given UConn incredible minutes in this tournament. Lamb has blossomed into a very danger scoring threat that is capable of going off for 20 points. Napier has played well at point which, allows Kemba Walker to play the two guards and gives him better scoring opportunities by coming off of screens. Roscoe Smith adds depth inside and is capable of bailing out Oriakhi if he gets into foul trouble. When it comes to Butler’s role players they have Shawn Vanzant, Zach Hahn, and Ronald Nored. All are very good role players but don’t have the scoring capability that UConn has. For Butler to have a shot to win they will need these three players to hit some wide open three’s.
  3. Kemba Walker: Arguably the best player in the nation, Kemba has put UConn on his back and taken them to this final four championship game. Not only is he a great scorer, but he can create and make things happen for his teammates. While Butler’s best player, Shelvin Mack, is a great scorer, I do not believe he can keep up with Kemba. Kemba will be going against a tough defender in Ronald Nored and is sure to face multiple double teams. For most players, this would give them trouble but for Kemba this is nothing new for him, and has not slowed him down to this point. My prediction is Kemba will go for 25+ points and carry UConn one more time for its third National Title.

Three Reasons Why Businesses Should Use Kiva

  1. More than a onetime donation: When your loan is repaid you can use that money to make another loan. This allows you to continually have an impact without increasing your funding.
  2.  You get to pick: Kiva allows the donor to pick who they want to invest in. You can pick by region, gender, or business. This is a cool feature because many times companies give money to charities and have no idea where their money goes. Kiva also allows lending teams. This feature allows multiple investors to combine funds and pick as a team, who they want to invest in.
  3. More than a charity: When you give money to Kiva, your money is not going to have a temporary effect. Instead, your money will be used to help start a business that hopefully will help the people in that region be self sufficient and improve their standard of living for years to come. Most non-profits bring temporary comfort, while Kiva seems to last longer.

Three Reasons Why Sports Media is Ruining Sports

1)      Too much of anything is not good: We have taking one of our passions and put it on steroids. We have become so obsessed with sports that we are running out of things to talk about. Things that were once minor details in sports are becoming huge stores. Gone are the days that we only follow athletes on the court. With media constantly hounding players, twitter updates, and YouTube Videos, we are endlessly able to follow our favorite stars.  The media is constantly stalking player on and off the field/court hoping they will make a mistake so they can get the next big story. It is easy to say it’s not the media’s fault; the athlete was the one who made the mistake. This is true to a point, but the added pressure of the media always being around makes it hard for a modern day athlete to live a normal life. Sports media is becoming more about the soap opera lives of the players, rather than the sports they play.

2)      Ruining Hero’s: Do you remember when people use to look up to athlete as role models? Tiger Woods, need I say more? With the spotlight constantly on our favorite athletes it is almost guaranteed they will do something that will disappoint you. Now is this because society has lost all of its morals? Possible, but what young person does not make a bad decision every once in a while. The only difference is they are on national TV. I guarantee the same things were going on 20 years ago, except the public wasn’t aware of it, due to the lack of media coverage. Sports media, give us our hero’s back by letting them live their lives media free.

3)      Where are the Highlights? When was the last time ESPN showed a highlight real that was longer than 15 seconds? Sports media used to be about showing the game and how it unfolded. Now it has turned into a couple cool highlights with a 15 minute discussion and expert’s opinions afterward. Half of the time these experts are over analyzing the situation and giving bias opinions. Are these experts really that helpful? Most of the time they are saying things we already know and when it comes to predicting a winner of a game, they are all over the board. Look at Jay Bilas for example, he completely bashed VCU on national TV for making the NCAA tournament and now they are one game away from a championship. Please sports media, get back to showing what everyone wants to see: longer highlights that explain what actually happened. No one really cares about an expert’s opinion.
