Acquisitions

Technology companies and acquisition are commonly known to be in the same sentence. These acquisitions of smaller companies happen every single day.  Two major acquisitions that have happened in the past few months were companies by the name of Nowait, and Beme. Nowait is  a company that sells technology services to restaurants in an order to plan ait times and make reservations all from an app. Beme is a company that was founded by a famous YouTuber by the name of Casey Neistat. Beme is a technology company that provides their services to larger companies. Both of these companies were just involved in acquisitions. Nowait was just bought for 40 million dollars from Yelp, and Beme was just purchased for 25 million dollars from CNN. WHat is cool about these two acquisitions in particular is the fact that everyone who worked at the companies before the acquisition have been able to stay at the company. Usually this does not happen when it comes to things like this, such as mergers. There is usually uncertainty as to who will keep their jobs, or what direction the company will be going in, but this is not the case for Nowait and Beme. Every employee kept their job and are now making more money than they originally would have been. Sometimes acquisitions can mean the end for a company, but sometimes they can mean a new beginning.

Embracing Clickbait

Youtube is one of the biggest influencers in our age. It is a hub for different creators of all types to upload their content in an attempt to persuade, entertain, or inform others. It is a driving force in everything we do, whether to fall back on for relaxation, or to watch a how-to video. One of the things that plagued Youtube for a very long time was a thing called clickbait. Youtube has picture boxes next to the titles of videos to give you a glimpse at what the video will contain. It started out being that the picture would just be a freeze frame from one point in the video, but over time people started modifying the picture boxes so that they could attract more viewers. Clickbait is a tactic that is used to entice the viewer to click on the video and watch. They tend to be either inflammatory images or phrases that lead the viewer on and makes them want to find out why that thing happened. Creators used to get slammed on for using clickbait, but now things have changed. Young youtube entrepreneurs are starting to embrace clickbait. They now are using it as a marketing technique and acknowledging it as so. No longer are people ashamed of clickbait, but use it to gain viewers.

Venture Lab Comparison

We say that a lot of businesses nowadays are transferring from the manufacturing and production sectors to the business and planning sectors. That is easy to believe seeing that we now have less farmers and more bankers, but what do we actually experience in our lives that show us this change? Production facilities are becoming less and less abundant while more and internet based companies. This became very prevalent to me during the Wolverine Venture Lab battle. A small percentage of the businesses that presented were actually businesses that provided a physical product for a tangible amount of money. The vast majority of businesses that were presented were companies that focused on an internet based mission or service. Whether it was a monthly service that was being provided, or a product that needed the internet to fulfill a social aspect about the company, they all were internet related instead of traditional production. This is one of the first times where I could see a physical comparison of different businesses and see into what categories they fell into.

YouTube is finally using their spanking belt.

YouTube has been the monopoly of online video uploads and watching for years on end. Whenever people think to watch a video, either for pleasure, or for knowledge, YouTube is the place to go. Being such a huge company that allows people to upload their own personal content onto their site is taking a risk. Their are certain security checks in place of course. You can report inappropriate content or a fake video, but being such a huge company, their was a lot of room to sneak through the cracks and take advantage of the system. Lately YouTube has been cracking down on two types of videos on their platform. The first platform that they started to crack down on were the videos that had algorithms attached that enabled them to have more views than would be possible normally. Taking down and banning those particular videos or channels, YouTube is hoping to “clean up their streets.” The more controversial topic in the YouTube community is the demonetization of videos with controversial topics. YouTube is taking videos that have controversial topics, mainly news channels and demonetizing their videos so that the creator does not receive any ad revenue from that video. This has created a crack in the road in the YouTube community. YouTubers are offended because they now feel like they do not have the freedom of speech and will be limited to what they can say in their videos now. Many big name YouTube celebrities and other people have left YouTube in order to prove a point to the company that they need to treat their content creators with a little more respect and admiration for all of the different content that they upload. One star that left the platform was Phillip DeFranco. YouTubers are crying out to the company to stop trying to control their videos and to let content creators create.

The power of social media

On March 15th, Jerome Jarre made a video and uploaded it to twitter. Jerome is a social media celebrity. He is well know through his appearances through vine as well as twitter and YouTube. He posted a video about the drought that has been happening in Somalia and how people have been starving to death and how we all need to rally together so that we can help Somalians. He called out Turkish Airlines because they are the only people that are allowing flights in and out of Somalia right now. He had the idea to fill up a plane with relief supplies as well as food and water and fly it into Somalia. His plead for action has caused thousands of people to turn their heads. Many celebrities and popular people have reached out and asked if they could help. Jerome contacted actor Ben Stiller on Friday, March 17th and asked if he and his team would be interested in filming, documenting, and helping out with the process.  Working together and setting up a meeting with Turkish Airlines, they came to an agreement where they would have access to 60 tons of cargo space immediately for use, and an additional 140 tons worth of cargo space over the next six months. This is truly an amazing story. In half of a week, one social media plea turned into a movement, and came into effect. The internet has been able to connect us like nothing else before, and to see social media being used for the good of other people is vastly encouraging.
