Too Excited

In an attempt to release the news of Osama bin Laden’s death quickly late Sunday night, MSNBC correspondent Norah O’Donnell accidentally reported on Twitter that “Obama” had been “killed” instead of Osama. Big whoops there.

“Obama shot and killed,” Norah O’Donnell posted on Twitter, citing NBC Chief Pentagon Correspondent Jim Miklaszewski as her source.

This just goes to show that even professionals make mistakes. Good thing her tweet didn’t go viral or there could have been some major rumors to fix.

Likester

A new startup known as Likester offers a searchable database of what has been “liked” on Facebook. A little more than a year ago, Facebook launched the “Like” button with great success, as millions of Web sites have now installed it. However, there really isn’t any way to search what is being “liked” across the social-networking site, which could be very valuable data for brands or just a way for consumers to check on what is popular with their friends.A new Seattle-based startup launched last week is seeking to fill this void. Users can view both what’s popular among their friends and what’s popular with everyone on Facebook. The Friends and Everyone sections rank the lists of liked items by what’s most popular, but you can also filter the results by any of the 50 offered categories. Likester can be a great tool for anyone to see what is trending. Hopefully companies can utilize this info to bring the consumers what they want.

U.S Government, Terrorism and Facebook?

After 9/11, every citizen became familiar with the color coded terrorism alert system. Different colors represent different levels of threat towards America from terrorists. From the low green level to the highest color of risk, red, the color system lost its potency with me since other alert system such as the air quality of the world system has a comparable color coated system.

Now the government has switched its ranking system from the five option, to a two choice level of warning- Elevated or Imminent. Here’s the kicker, the government has also noticed how important Facebook and Twitter has become. Instead of simply posting the warning levels on news stations, starting April 27th, the government will use the social media giants to effectively spread the warnings. Hopefully this will spread the news faster and more efficiently to the people of this great country.
