Baseball has been considered America’s game for over a century. In recent years, the game has really been tainted by the use of anabolic steroids. The most recent case that has littered the news has been the Alex Rodriguez case. This week, A Rod admitted to taking steroids from 2001-2003 while he played with the Texas Rangers. His name was 1 of 105 names that was included in an “anonymous” steroid taken during 2003. none of the names were released, but recently A Rod has been accused of taking steroids and this past week he admitted to it. Now Bud Selig, the commissioner of baseball is talking about taking away his 3 mvp awards (one of which was received in 2003), and suspending him from baseball.
I think it is wrong for Selig to punish A Rod like this. Although steroids were illegal in the US in ’03, they were not tested for nor deemed “illegal in baseball” during that time. A Rod has been humiliated and admitted that he was wrong, and if Selig wants to really fix baseball he wouldn’t punish A Rod. I think the right thing for Selig to do would be to allow a “grace period” where anyone who took steroids would be aloud to confess go without major punishment, but after that time he should get access to the Mitchel report and really clean up baseball. I think some punishments that would be fair to people who have taken steroids weather they admit to it during the grace period or not would be to revoke permanent records. you cant take back MVP awards, but home run records and things of that nature should not have steroid users as the leaders. I have never been a Rodriguez fan, but i really respect him for admitting, and he should not be punished for what he did although it was wrong. I think he should be used as an example to other MLB players and rising players to know what not to do and really see the consequences.
Baseball is loosing its appeal and many fans due to this whole steroid issue. I have always been a big baseball fan, but with all the negative press that has surrounded it for the past few years with Bonds, Clemens, McGuire, etc, and now Rodriguez, it is really hard to stay enthusiastic about the game. I think it would be fair to expect a decline in season ticket holders and amounts of fans at games this upcoming season due to the declining economy and problems that are really engulfing major league baseball.
