Creative Commons Copyright Collaboration

From what I understand, Creative Commons allows you to have a copyright on something while still being able to share it with others.  The ides, concept, picture, etc. is still yours, but through creative commons you can give permission for people to use your copyrighted item in whatever ways you permit.  This seems like a great idea to build off of other’s ideas legally.
